Opening Ceremony of the Tony Bridson Memorial
and Dennis Hemsley Tournaments - Monday 27th September 2004
David Sedgwick has made available to me the words of his opening remarks,
made at the beginning of the Bridson/Major and Hemsley/Minor tournaments.
It was a very nice speech, and I thought it would be fitting to post it
here for the benefit of those not present. JS
My name is David Sedgwick. I'm back with you for my fourteenth successive
annual visit to this Congress, a situation which has only been made possible
by the dedicated efforts of a few people whom I'll mention in a moment.
The other Arbiters, who will mainly be working at the Ocean Castle but
whom you may see during the course of the week, are David Welch, John
Robinson and Cathy Rogers.
One Arbiter is not with us this year. At the prizegiving last year I
expressed the hope that Richard Furness would continue to place his qualities
at the service of British chess for many years to come. Sadly that was
not to be as Richard died on 15th April last. He was Chief Arbiter at
this Congress for eleven years and, given that we now have four Arbiters,
it's salutary to remember that for much of that time he carried out the
arbiting function virtually single handed. Very fittingly the entire Congress
this year is devoted to his memory.
Also not with us this year is Tony Bridson, who died during the Congress
last year. Tony was the Marketing Manager at the Cherry Orchard Hotel
and in that capacity he was involved with the event for ten years, about
the last half of which he spent battling against cancer. Although not
himself a chess player, he did more for the game than many who are. The
tournament formerly called the Major has been renamed in his memory.
It was the wish of both men that the Smith & Williamson British Championships
would one day be staged here on the Isle of Man. With the redevelopment
of the Villa Marina that became a realistic possibility, and next summer
the Championships will indeed be taking place there in Douglas. Both men
lived long enough to know that their dream would be fulfilled, but neither
will be there to see the realisation of it. If you love this Island as
much as I do, and as they did, there could be no more fitting tribute
to both men than for you all to come back next summer, and get all your
friends to come, so as to make those Championships a resounding success.
I'm delighted that we have with us today Tony's wife Edwina, Richard's
wife Judy and Richard's daughter Clare. Ladies and gentlemen, would you
please give a very warm welcome to three ladies whose husbands and father
did so much for this event.
But, as we remember those no longer with us, so also we move on. We're
very fortunate to have with us this year as Tournament Director Stewart
Reuben, Chairman of the Fide Organizers' Committee. Stewart is renowned
for his imaginitive and innovative thinking, a quality which seems if
anything to increase with every passing year. It's entirely due to him
that immediately after the Congress we shall be staging here in Port Erin
the inaugural World Senior Team Championship, which forms part of the
BCF's Centenary Celebrations. Stewart is the pioneer of a fairer method
of awarding grading prizes which will be applied here this year in these
two tournaments.
I know that one thing which Stewart believes strongly is that memorial
events, although important, are in many ways second best. It is far, far
preferable to honour people during their limetime, while they are still
fit and well and able to appreciate the tribute which is being paid to
them. I'm therefore delighted that amongst the competitors in the Dennis
Hemsley Tournament will be .... Mr. Dennis Hemsley. When Dennis first
conceived the idea of this Congress about fifteen years ago, there were
many who told him that it could never be done. After being Tournament
Director since outset, he's decided that the time has now come for him
to take on a lesser role; but he's here with us, larger than life as ever.
Long may that continue to be so. [end]
