330 players took part in the congress, a record for the event. It was held earlier in the year than usual in order to avoid clashing with the Smith & Williamson British Championships which are also being held in Edinburgh this year.

Winner for the 7th time was Grandmaster Paul Motwani, though this time he had the share the title with Woman Grandmaster Ketevan Arakhamia-Grant, from Georgia but long-time resident in Scotland with her Scottish husband, Jonathan Grant.

Almost stealing the show from better-known names was Graeme Kafka, a 19-year-old student at Edinburgh University. Despite his lowly rating of 2103, Kafka drew with Motwani, beat IM Mark Orr, and finished in an excellent third place. Ian Robertson was awarded the best game prize for his win against Colin McNab.
