Scott Freeman reports: A total of 49 people battled it
out for the £400 prize fund on offer in today's 6 round open rapidplay
event at Coulsdon. A strong field saw two IMs in Danny Gormally and Colin
Crouch with Jovica Radovanovic over 200 and a host of strong players just
below the 200 mark.
Favourite Gormally appeared to have slipped up midway through the day
when he blundered, only drawing with Donny Muter. Crouch and Radovanovic
were then the favourites until they then drew with each other in round
5. Gormally beat Radovanovic in the final round whilst Crouch was held
by Coulsdon stalwart Peter Wann, who has been making his presence felt
in a a number of rapidplays held at Coulsdon recently.
Gormally was half a point clear of a maximum with Crouch and Radanovic
just behind. Wann deservedly took the Under 170 prize whilst the reminder
were shared in what was an exciting finishing in all cases. This will
certainly held Danny Gormally's case in the British Chess Federation's
Grand Prix, which he leads at present.
