No-trump Bidding
by Mike Wenble with Sally Brock

Cassell, £9.99, ISBN 0 304 36806 7

New British authors have been thin on the ground recently, with only the best able to make the grade in today's increasingly competitive marketplace. The main author, Mike Wenble, who has taken up bridge again after a career and family break, has joined forces with one of the key writers in Bridge Plus's sister publication, BRIDGE. Together they have created an interesting and well-researched book on the subject of 1NT and 2NT openings plus ancillary sequences.

The topic has been popular recently, with Danny Kleinman and Ron Klinger already having explored the subject. The book now under review, No-trump Bidding, is perhaps more easy-going and better suited to weak no-trump addicts. The style reminds me of the true gentlemen of the game such as Peter Burrows and the late Norman D V Hart. The authors cover alternative treatments to their recommended ones and, with rare exception, they make a good job of doing so.

In addition to 1NT openings and responses, the authors cover 2NT openings, opener's no-trump rebids and handling intervention. You will be pleased to hear that not all their sequences are as long as in the given example. The authors say that the deal comes from Hugh Kelsey's Slam Bidding. Presumably, Kelsey also finds the right contract.

(2) Asks opener to rebid 2hx and shows either a five-card or longer heart suit or a raise to 2NT or, as here, a hand with slam interest looking for 4-4 fit
(3) As requested
(4) One of the balanced options rather than a five-card heart suit
(5) Minimum, to play if responder has a raise to 2NT
(6) Four diamonds, slam try
(7) Four hearts and (in the authors' methods) not denying four diamonds (a questionable move with such poor hearts)
(8) Four spades and (a little inconsistently in view of (7) denying four-card heart support
(9) Delayed four-card diamond support
(10) Cue-bid
(11) Grand slam force in diamonds
(12) Two top honours.
